An amazing survivor and a fascinatingly self-realized artist. Mexico has sheltered and nurtured more than a few foreign artists like Leonora Carrington. Eisenstein, for example.
Thank you for this art history lesson. II did a diorama of the Self Portrait, complete with a dollhouse rocking horse and an amended Barbie. Almost 40 years ago at community college, the diorama no longer exists!
Wow, Martini, that is some amazing art. It is a shame that female artists are often stifled by family and societal expectations. I know it happens to male artists too but not to the same degree. Thank goodness Leonora's father let her go to Florence and study instead of marrying her off to the highest bidder. Thanks for exposing me to her work.
I think in Leonora's case, pig-headed stubbornness helped her escape what would have been for her an unbearable life. Her parents, particularly her father, were not enthralled at having a daughter who was an artist, but that's what *she* wanted to do and she railed and rebelled until she got there.
Sometimes I think of how many people have been forced to live an unbearable life because of convention. Or conservatism, which is trying to drag us all back to the dark ages. People should be allowed to do and be what they want. The Declaration of Independence mentions life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for good reasons.
I had never heard of her before...thank you! I will definitely look more deeply into her works.

Oh how cool is that?! I hope you took pix.
It was almost 40 years ago, and I think I did take pictures, but heaven knows where they might have gotten to!
She was also an author of fiction that displayed the same stylistic interpretations as her art.

Thank you for this beautiful, informative narrative!
So interesting thank you! Some work looks like Remedios del Varo. These Mexican female artists are so fascinating!
I had never heard of this artist but what a story! And the art is fantastic.
