Today’s header gif is a segment from German DJ Marusha’s 1994’s remix of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” the song Judy Garland made famous in the 1939 movie “Wizard of Oz.” It’s a peppy little remix, good for getting the endorphins pumping in the morning.
Marusha is a German-born electronic artist and DJ of Greek descent. She’s in her late 50’s and still spinning worldwide, and I love that about her. She started DJ’ing in 1990 and by 1991 she had her own weekly radio program “Dancehall.” After the radio station folded, she transitioned to a new frequency and new weekly program “Rave Satellite,” which she hosted until 2007. Additionally, from 1993 to 1996 she presented a television show called "Feuerreiter," [fire rider] a popular dance music show directed at young viewers. Besides her “…Rainbow” remix grabbing a gold record status, she was awarded a “VIVA Comet 95” award as “Best Techno Act” and an “Echo Award 95” for “Best Female Artist” (both in 1995). The same year, she was nominated for “Best Female Artist” by MTV.
Interesting. Here's mine from 1981. (Those are guitars -- mostly -- playing the melody line, FYI.) Avanti! https://kevindunn.bandcamp.com/track/somewhere-over-the-rainbow
Judy Garland's version will always be #1, but for me Vincent Price holds second place. Perhaps it's more the visuals, but the final scene of Dr. Phibes Rises Again, wherein he sails serenely into the afterlife with his beloved wife's body, never fails to jerk a tear or two from my jaded eyes.
